The Rock MKII is an incredibly accurate, critically acclaimed 2-way active mixing reference near-field monitor considered by many professionals to be the reference all others are measured by.

Designed for demanding audio professionals spanning a wide range of applications including tracking, mixing and critical mastering applications. The Rock is equally at home sat atop a large-format mixing console or in a high-end studio, a home studio or a mastering facility.
Amplification
The Rock is equipped with a 100 watt discrete bi-polar low feedback amplifier with custom wound transformers designed by the amp guru Tim de Paravicini of Esoteric Audio Research. Dedicated LF and HF sections result in a very fast, clean and astoundingly accurate audio reproduction.
Drivers
The Rock uses a 50KHz folded ribbon tweeter designed by ELAC. The 180mm woofer features a 0.2mm aluminum foil that is chemically bonded to a rigid pulp fiber cone. This seamless combination of drivers delivers a frequency response of 37Hz-38kHz +/- 3db, and incredible resolution and detail, and provides a microscopic view of any program material whilst remaining comfortable for long listening periods.
Sealed cabinet
Unlike many near-field monitors the cabinet is a sealed enclosure that doesn’t rely on a resonate port to deliver it’s low-end performance. The advantage of this design philosophy is more accurate bass with better time domain performance and a gradual 12dB per octave roll off as opposed to a 24dB roll off with ported designs. The cabinet is made from 12mm, 9-ply Baltic Birch plywood. A front to rear bracing system is also incorporated to stop cabinet flexing. To add density, mass and rigidity the front baffle is manufactured from 12mm Corian and bonded to the 12mm ply baffle.

THE GOLD STANDARD IN THE MIDFIELD RANGE

The KH 420 is designed for a working distance of 1.5 to 3 m (5’ to 9’). It handles this space effortlessly thanks to great power reserves and precisely concentrated dispersion. Even in diverse acoustical environments the KH 420 remains neutral and clear in every detail down to the subtlest nuances. No subtlety is lost; every sound element can be localized.

The KH 420 is a three-way tri-amplified monitor with thermally protected Class AB amplifiers (330 W and two times 140 W). Just like the drivers, its Mathematically Modeled Dispersion™ (MMD™) waveguide is engineered for optimum precision. Sound distributed in a horizontally precise manner ensures flexibility in the listening position; the narrower vertical dispersion reduces the negative effects of nearby reflections, for example from a desk or mixing console. The dispersion of the KH 420 is deliberately designed to be narrower, to guarantee reference sound at longer working distances.

BEST WORKING ENVIRONMENT: CLOSE TO PROFESSIONAL EARS

The KH 420 is designed for midfield applications and as main monitor in project, music, broadcast and post-production studios for recording, mixing and mastering. And in a multi-channel system, it can also be freely combined with all other Neumann studio monitors.

PORTS AND HIGH DYNAMICS: NO LONGER A CONTRADICTION

With its tri-channel amplifiers the KH 420 also realizes sound pressures of up to 122.4 dB. And it thereby retains high-resolution and neutral representation across the entire frequency response. This also includes an exceptional bass response down to 26 Hz. Despite using ports, there is no “overhang” or audible resonance in the low frequency range and the transient response is precisely controlled at all times.

The computer modeled chassis is constructed of LRIM™ materials which eliminates standing wave resonances and suppresses intermodulation distortion, especially in the midrange.

For demanding treble, our own specially developed, powerful alloy fabric dome ensures distortion-free reproduction. The fabric dome captures the midrange with utmost precision. Its ultralight material and the powerful neodymium magnet enable a significantly better transient response with considerably less distortion than comparable midrange drivers.

DIGITAL INPUT AND DELAY OPTION

The Digital Input Module DIM 1 expands the loudspeaker electronics by a digital XLR input, a digital BNC input and a digital BNC output (192 kHz/24 Bit) for flexible digital signal links. With the delay function (adjustment range 0 - 400 ms) of the DIM 1, the audio signal can be delayed to ensure audio-visual synchronization (lip sync). In addition, the high resolution of the delays (0.1 ms) allows equalization of the propagation delays. The delay can be added to both inputs (digital and analog). The KH 420 can be retrofitted with a DIM 1.

HUNDREDS OF GOOD REASONS FROM THE NEUMANN PHILOSOPHY

The KH 420 has also been developed true to the Neumann philosophy for monitor loudspeakers. Every component, every shape, every signal and every wave motion is a consequence of this philosophy. No form or component is there without reason. There are hundreds of tangible reasons built into the KH 420, which all stand for exceptionally pure and neutral sound. These include, for example, curvatures of the housing that reduce edge diffraction. Also included is the pistonic output of the bass driver which does not give rise to harmonic distortions, even with the highest sound peaks. Some of these reasons are obvious in the KH 420. Others Neumann prefers to keep to itself. But together, each can be heard – sound professionals in both large and small studios all around the world can testify to this. You can read more about the Neumann philosophy for studio monitors here.

Quite possibly the ultimate expression of a 2-way design, The Super Rock starts out as a Rock MKII and turns every detail up to eleven! We’ve anaylised every single component and parameter of The Rock in microscopic detail and challenged our designers to improve it whilst keeping the same 2-way design and convenient form factor. What they achieved is quite simply a landmark product that goes deeper, hits harder and retrieves even greater levels of resolution. Although at its heart it’s a 2-way it certainly Rocks like a miniature Boulder.

Drivers
Starting with the drivers, we have increased the diameter of the bass driver up to 220mm, the same size as bigger brother, The Boulder. However our engineers didn’t just settle for using the exact same driver, they demanded a new specification specifically matched to The Super Rock’s smaller sealed cabinet. The 200mm SEAS custom aluminium woofer delivers amazing micro and macro-dynamics. The cone and the low loss rubber surround have been specifically designed to eliminate cone edge resonance and distortion typically associated with soft cones.

The same long, high temperature voice coil as The Boulder provides super low distortion and very high power handling capacity. The bass driver hands over seamlessly to an all-new Air Motion Transformer Tweeter from respected German manufacturer Mundorf. This has incredibly low distortion figures, excellent transient response and carefully considered dispersion characteristics that deliver seamless inter-driver coherence.

3-way active monitor
The new Boulder MK-III 3-way active monitor supersedes the MK-II model and continues to build on this revered monitor, further redefining expected levels of sonic performance and accuracy for this truly world-class monitoring system.

Like the critically acclaimed MK-I & MK-II, the new MK-III boast's a fast, accurate detailed sound and prodigious extended bass response, and delivers even greater levels of SPL to fit into any critical listening environment or scenario.

New MK-III Features

• 2 x New 8.5" / 220mm Crystal Membrane Woofers.
• 2 x New 300 watt Class D amplifiers inc dedicated PSU for woofers.

Crystal Membrane 8.5" / 220mm Woofers
The eye-catching surface of the precision built German Crystal Membrane is more than just an attractive design feature. The Crystal Membrane woofer construction uses Aluminum-Sandwich AS Technology. The crystal-shaped inverse aluminium dome is joined to the paper cone in a special gluing process to result in the desired sandwich construction. Resembling the surface of a large crystal, the aluminium-foil stamping stiffens the aluminium dome, diminishing resonances and minimizing coloration, while improving power handling and dynamics.
The voice coil design of the bass drivers results in an expanded range of the respective drivers by nearly an octave. The wide, double-asymmetrical rubber surround of the 220m woofer can handle up to ±20 mm excursions for truly prodigious volume and lowest distortion, a unique engineering achievement for a driver of its size.

Amplification - Class D & Class A/B with two separate power supplies
Regarded as easily rivalling many larger and more costly monitoring systems, the new MK-III is now fitted with 2 x 300 watt Class D amplifiers with their own separate power supply specifically for the 2 x Crystal Membrane woofers. The Boulder MK-III still retains it's two original discrete custom Class A/B amplifiers with their own dedicated power supply for the Coaxial X-Jet mid-range / ribbon tweeter.

With the power delivery of the two large Class D amplifiers running the two 8.5" woofers alongside the custom Class A/B amplifier for the Coaxial X-Jet mid-tweeter, the Boulder delivers a life-like sense of scale and take any performance in their stride offering high SPL figures with incredible effortless dynamics and transients.

X-JET Coaxial Mid-Range & Folded Ribbon Tweeter Drive Unit
The unique and exclusive centrally mounted Coaxial unit which is hand built in Germany comprises of a 5" ring mid-range drive unit and a centrally mounted JET5 50 kHz folded ribbon tweeter. The combination provides a reduced stray magnetic field with higher efficiency, improved dynamics and smooth, even frequency dispersion.

This compact design assures true point source phase accurate delivery across it's entire frequency spectrum from 694 Hz to 50 kHz, eliminating phase rotation and frequency anomalies. The result is exceptional imaging and detail, significantly improved impulse and power control providing much improved dynamic range and an even frequency response and dispersion throughout the listening space. The X JET driver can be described as dynamic and detailed with depth and spaciousness over a broad listening area providing exceptional detail to beyond 50kHz.

JET 5 Folded Ribbon Tweeter
This concentrically located JET5 ribbon tweeter uses a unique folded ribbon technology providing a wide, smooth dispersion and a flat frequency response exceeding 50kHz.

The precision German built JET 5 tweeter, which is also used in the Mini-Rock and The Rock has been highly regarded for years due to its superior impulse control, smooth sound character and incredible detail.

Delivering true high-definition sound, the JET 5 tweeter enthrals with its lightning-fast response and wide dynamic range, offering minimal distortion, lots of headroom and a distinctly wider frequency range than conventional dome tweeters. The ELAC JET tweeter is one of the most legendary tweeters in the industry and has won international praise with its transparent and effortless sound image.

The JET tweeter was developed to perfection on the basis of the famous Air Motion Transformer by loudspeaker pioneer Dr. Oskar Heil.

Its operating principle is based on a concertinaed-foil membrane, driven by a strong magnet system of neodymium rods. This motor drives the air considerably faster than the pistonic motion of a conventional driver, with gains in higher sensitivity and extraordinary dynamics. Due to many additional design changes, like an improved new neodymium magnet system, even higher efficiency, higher sound pressure levels and frequency response up to 50 kHz was achieved.

The core of the JET tweeter is the folded foil membrane. With a fold width of only 0.84 mm, a major requirement in the JET production is precision.

To guarantee repeated accuracy and unchanging quality even with high production capacity, gluing and handling are now executed by two SCARA robots. The folding and fixing of the membrane, however, are executed by hand, since for production steps requiring extreme precision, the manual dexterity of skilled technicians is irreplaceable. Due to continuous improvement, the JET 5 tweeter creates an effortless, airy and resonance-free image up to 50,000 Hz, and with its linear frequency response is ideally suited for the reproduction of DVD-A and SACD.

Sealed Cabinet Design

Accurate Bass Reproduction
Like all Unity Audio monitors, the cabinet is a sealed enclosure that doesn't rely on a traditional resonate port to deliver low bass frequencies. The advantage of this design philosophy is more accurate bass with better time domain performance and a gradual 12dB per octave roll off as opposed to a 24dB roll off with ported designs.

Superior Transient Response
This approach also guaranties super fast transient reproduction far quicker than conventional ported enclosures allowing the user to hear every detail of a sounds initial attack making decisions about compressor envelopes far easier to judge.

Accurate Frequency Response At Any Level
Another invaluable attribute of the sealed cabinet design is the ability to monitor at extremely low levels without compromising low frequency reproduction which is an issue with other types of cabinet designs. No longer does the user have to monitor at higher monitoring levels to judge the bass correctly. Working for long periods of time at low to moderate listening levels while maintaining a full and accurate picture is all possible with the Boulder MK-III.

Cabinet Construction
To accommodate the large 220mm woofers the sealed cabinet uses 18mm Baltic Birch plywood and a huge 30mm Corian front baffle with large radius edges to reduce reflection and cabinet resonances. This adds density, mass and rigidity providing a solid and resonant free mounting platform for all the drive units.

Applications
The Boulder MK-III is ideal for a number of critical applications be it stereo or multi-channel such as recording, mixing, mastering, composing.

Boulder 4 way Main Monitor Options
The Boulders can be expanded into a full 4 way main monitoring system with the dedicated B.A.B.E ( Boulder Active Bass Extender ), or partnered with one or two Avalanche Sub-woofer's to make a 2.1 or multi channel surround system.
