Josephson Series Five microphones are rugged, stable and cost-effective alternatives to high voltage metal diaphragm lab mics for speaker testing, room acoustics, and general audio measurements between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. The 6mm condenser capsule has a permanently polarized back plate and a 3.5μm polyester diaphragm, metallized with a rugged nickel-chromium alloy. Frequency response is flat ±2 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Like all Josephson mics, the diaphragm is critically conditioned during manufacture for minimum drift over time. Series Five mics have been in rugged field service for more than twenty years, with little or no change in response. Several versions are available for use with a variety of other equipment.
The C550 series is a “half inch” model available in two sensitivity steps, each one covering an operating range of about 100 dB. The C550H provides 10 mV/Pa output, suitable for microphone level inputs. The F version has lower sensitivity, for use in very high sound level measurements. Frequency response is flat for on-axis sound incidence. All models may be powered with standard 24 to 48 volt phantom supplies, and provide symmetrical active balanced output. They will also operate on phantom power as low as 15 V with some reduction in maximum level. For more critical applications, please refer to model C617 in the Josephson Series Six, which has lower noise and higher overload point than the Series Five, uses lab grade metal diaphragm mic capsules, and standard phantom power rather than the dedicated power supply required for most lab mics.

The Josephson C617 is the second generation of our high voltage metal diaphragm omnidirectional microphone, suitable for the most critical sound recording and measurement applications. It operates from standard P48 phantom power yet provides full 200 volt polarize potential for a lab grade standard “half inch” microphone capsule. The C617SET is supplied with a Microtech Gefell MK221 capsule. The dynamic range is dependent on the inherent noise of the microphone capsule and the limits of P48 phantom power. The Josephson cascode FET front end circuitry introduced in the C606 is further refined in the C617, combined with our traditional balanced bipolar class-A symmetrical output stage.
For music recording, the Josephson balanced symmetrical circuitry together with a sub-micron thickness metal diaphragm capsule translate to the purest, most open sound possible. Pickup of sound pressure alone results in no proximity effect, very low sensitivity to wind noise, and phase accuracy that cannot be obtained with directional microphones. Spot-miking applications or overall stereo pickups using spaced pairs take on a new level of detail and precision not possible with other types. The small capsule size results in a nearly perfect omnidirectional pattern for accurate pickup of the wholeacoustic environment.

Pattern selection (C700A and S)
Omni: all W
Subcardioid/hypocardioid: W with X mixed in about –6 dB
Cardioid: equal amounts of W and X
Supercardioid/hypercardioid: X with W mixed in about –6 dB
Figure 8: all X
To reverse direction (unidirectional patterns favoring the rear of the mic) invert phase of the X signal.
MS Stereo (C700S)
Left front: W+X+Y
Center front: W+X
Right front: W+X-Y
Left rear: W-X+Y
Right rear: W-X-Y

Series Seven Microphones
C705
Josephson Series Seven microphones provide expert users with unprecedented flexibility. The C705 uses the same single-diaphragm capsule used in the C715, but with a transformerless output stage like the C700 and C716, and operated in cardioid only.
The C705 is a versatile studio microphone using a large diameter, center- supported single diaphragm cardioid capsule derived from our C715, and the discrete FET cascode input circuit and symmetrical balanced transformerless output circuit of the C716. The capsule, using a 5 micron gold-metallized diaphragm and precision machined internal surfaces, provides a smooth and very extended high end, and the enhanced proximity effect characteristic of single-diaphragm mics. This combination provides a new range of control for vocal pickup without sibilance, with a variety of tone colors possible by careful selection of distance and angle to the microphone. It’s also excellent for detailed instrument pickup without the harshness typical of many large-diaphragm mics, and works well with a variety of preamps and input stages, due to its low output impedance.
The housing is made of case-hardened steel with a unique offset grille support structure that greatly reduces internal reflections. The entire capsule assembly is internally shockmounted, so the microphone can be attached directly to a stand through its yoke mount. The black finish from the hardening process is very rugged for long life in studio and stage applications.
The design of the C705 includes the best parts of several Josephson microphones, at a lower cost due to using a cardioid-only capsule, a steel housing with a rugged industrial finish rather than a cosmetic plated finish on brass, and an output connector on the microphone body rather than an attached output cable.

Series Seven microphones provide unprecedented flexibility in studio pickups with a variety of directional patterns. The C715 uses a unique single large diaphragm capsule with an adjustable vent allowing cardioid or omni operation, and includes a new, patent-pending metal foam housing for minimum acoustic coloration due to the elimination of many internal reflecting surfaces.
The C715 features the new single-sided capsule with a 5 micron evaporated gold diaphragm. The backplate has an adjustable vent, reached through an opening in the back of the grille, that allows the mic to be adjusted from cardioid to omni. The single diaphragm capsule has a particularly smooth sound, usable for many studio applications where some conventional dual diaphragm mics are too harsh or bright.
The internal circuitry uses a class-A cascode FET front end, driving a large nickel core Lundahl output transformer for compatibility with a wide range of preamps and consoles. The internal high voltage linear supply generates capsule polarization voltage without using a switching oscillator, for very low noise.
The capsule assembly in the C715 is internally shock mounted so that the mic may be attached directly to a stand through its rugged yoke mount, without using any external accessories.

Series Seven microphones provide unprecedented flexibility in studio pickups with a variety of directional patterns. The C716 dual- diaphragm capsule is optimized for cardioid, and is ideal for vocal pickups and instrumentals where a warm, natural sound is needed with minimum acoustic coloration. Off-axis response is particularly smooth, yielding excellent results in a variety of acoustic environments.
The C716 features a cardioid version of the large dual-diaphragm capsule used in Josephson’s C700 series, with a 5 micron evaporated gold diaphragm. The head grille
uses Josephson’s patent-pending hard metal foam structure welded to the housing tube, instead of wire mesh or perforated metal. No other structure is needed, so internal
reflections are randomized for clean, detailed sound pickup. The entire housing, circuit board, capsule and all its internal parts are made by Josephson in the USA. The microphone features a hard matte black chrome finish for durability in studio use.
The internal circuitry uses a class-A FET front end with active balanced transformerless output using discrete large-geometry devices like those in the Josephson C700 and C617. The internal high voltage linear supply generates capsule polarization voltage without using any digital devices or oscillators, for very low noise.
The capsule assembly in the C716 is internally shock mounted so that
the mic may be attached directly to a stand through its rugged yoke mount, without using any external accessories.

The Josephson C725 provides classic studio microphone performance using a hybrid of vacuum tube and solid state technology, and the classic dual-diaphragm capsule manufactured that’s used in the C700 and C716 microphones. A separate high voltage regulated power supply is provided, with five switchable directional patterns and a unique ☉/☾ selector to optimize the signal path. The C725 is suitable for detailed vocal and instrument pickup.
The head grille uses Josephson’s patented aluminum foam, fused to the housing for physical and electrical protection, with only an ultra-fine highly open mesh for contamination protection. No other structure is needed, so internal reflections are random and minimal, allowing clean, detailed sound pickup. The capsule assembly is internally shock-mounted so the microphone can be attached directly to a stand through its yoke mount. The C725 features a satin nickel finish for durability in studio use.
The internal circuitry is related to other Josephson mics, with a cascode topology for best linearity. Instead of using two FETs to form the cascode, in the C725 the voltage gain section uses a low-noise FET, while the current gain stage uses a readily available current production pentode vacuum tube. This provides the low noise of the FET along with the dynamic characteristics of the vacuum tube. The output is provided through a custom nickel-core transformer, which has independent windings for output and gain control.
The PS725 power supply allows operation on 100 to 240 volt mains supplies and allows selection of five directional patterns and two signal/dynamics characteristics. The ☉ setting operates at full gain, with a high sensitivity of 40 mV/Pa, and the warmth characteristic of many vacuum tube mics. In the ☾ setting, a small amount of negative feedback is provided from a dedicated winding of the output transformer back to the front end of the amplifier. This reduces the sensitivity by 12 dB, to 10 mV/Pa, and linearizes the circuit to provide a more neutral character and the ability to handle higher levels. Switching between the two modes is accomplished with a precision reed relay inside the microphone. Five separate power supply sections are used: a preregulator for the vacuum tube filament along with a final regulator inside the microphone so that filament voltage is not changed by cable length, two low noise supplies for the high voltage regulator, and a precision shunt regulator for the vacuum tube plate and polarization voltages.
The cable is a highly flexible five-pair type, 3 m long, terminating in a “large Tuchel” 12-contact connector. It may optionally be extended up to 50 meters. One pin of the male connector is removed and the corresponding female socket blocked to assure that other mics are not connected to the power supply.
The C725 is supplied in a rugged, Pelican brand fitted carrying case with the power supply, line cord and protection sleeve.

The Josephson e22S side-address cardioid was designed to meet the needs of noted recording engineer Steve Albini. The physical profile allows unobtrusive placement, even with tight percussion layouts. Unique among studio condenser microphones, the e22S capsule geometry is optimized for spot miking performance. The circuit uses a cascode discrete FET front end, combined with a custom Lundahl output transformer. The electronics were designed to interface easily with either transformer or direct coupled mic preamps. The e22S has low self-noise, so it delivers low level detail, and handles high sound pressure levels for minimal distortion on extremely loud passages. The microphone housing is very rugged, with a precision machined, satin black chrome finish. “The specific need addressed by the e22S was drum kit recording, and the mics are used in that capacity nearly every day, but once they were in our hands, they quickly became a favorite mic for many instruments, including acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, guitar amplifiers, organ and horns. The e22S is easily the most versatile microphone in our cabinet.
